This is one of Dan Finkel's clever ideas. The instructions were simple: three buttons on the calculator are broken, so you have to find ways to calculate 56 using the remaining buttons.
Every student could find at least one answer, and they each had an 'Aha' moment when they realised they'd found a pattern to unlock infinite equations that fit the criteria. Examples of several students' work are shown below.
